YouTube on Copyright

Copyright, Creative Commons, open source, open access, open educational resources … the conversations have been constant in my world lately.

From TED, here’s YouTube’s Margaret Gould Stewart on YouTube’s approach to copyright. The big takeaways for me:

  1. YouTube checks your uploads against algorithms for existing works pre-flagged by the contributor as proprietary.
  2. The level of copyright protections chosen by the creator can change over time.
  3. Sometimes, more sharing results in more profitability for the creator.
  4. And sometimes, hanging onto copyright is the best bet for the moment.
