“A Place Where Ideas Can Come to Life”

The public library in Westport, Connecticut, opened its own Maker Space amid the stacks earlier this summer. Its first maker-in-residence, Joseph Schott, described a makerspace as “a place where ideas can come to life.” I couldn’t agree more with Schott’s quote … it’s why I think libraries and makerspaces make great partners.

He actually begins his sentence by saying how makerspaces are different from traditional libraries because it is in makerspaces that “ideas can come to life.” But rather than throw up my arms and wail, “Why didn’t you notice that before?” I find myself thinking that his statements fuels my sense that traditional library spaces have not appealed to all citizens and that adding makerspaces or maker activities can help the library gain relevance for a broader swath of the population.
